| History of a Family
Business:
In 1949, with a strong back, $800.00
and a car and trailer, Richard purchased used furniture from
individuals in the greater Lawrence area and from auctions in
Boston.
Shortly thereafter, Richard started selling new furniture. Next
Richard purchased his first moving van and started
Richard
The Mover.
In 1954, Richard's moved to Archer Street, in 1964 Richard's outgrew
the Archer Street location and purchased the old Lawrence wholesale
drug building at 25 Water Street, where Richard's sells only brand
new name brand home furnishings.
In 1979, Richard moved his used furniture annex to 30 Water Street,
across from Richard's 5-floor NEW furniture showroom.
Richard and Rita Cormier have pretty much retired from the family
business now, but leave the everyday running of the business to
their daughter Lynne and son-in-law Gamal, who manage the used
furniture annex. The new furniture store is operated by Richard's
daughter Suzan and son Rick. The children grew up in the furniture
store and are very knowledgeable about furniture.
